D-Day Heaven Help the French: Klohs Encounters

D- Day Tues. Oct 14, 2008

Ted and I are about to embark.

We really wanted this trip to include Ange, Zach and Spike-to-be, for their baby-moon, but since Ange has a dissertation to defend a few short days after what would have been the return date, I guess that wouldn't have been too smart.

Our mission has not really left the ground yet, so France has not encountered us (again) as of yet. Before we arrive there, though, we are landing in Amsterdam, perhaps not enough ground time to visit Dam Square and the red light district, so we have to see that again on our next time around.

We are landing in Lyon. This will be a relatively "free" vacation, or one could say calling in our favors, as we used miles for the flight (50,000 each) for a surprisingly good deal of landing in Lyon, France (we could have equally chosen Marseille, Nice, Monte Carlo - and those were just the ones I researched) and returning from Paris. Imagine that you can get a none main city both coming and going, and aller/retour from two different cities for a mere 50,000 miles! I find that to be astounding. Furthermore, we did not have to adjust even one day, we chose and they signed us up!

As for who is putting us up? First, we are staying for a few days at an ex Amity Aide and family's house (Marie-Hélène(French) + Gerhard (German), Elisabeth (Ferman) and Anna (Grench)) who have remained dear friends since 1980. We will make them some chocolate chip cookies or Brownies as the French don't know how to make these luscious entities, and in exchange we get room, board and 365 varieties of French cheese (okay, maybe only the 10 best).

I am hoping to see les Traboules which a series of hidden underground hiding places for the French resistance during WWII but were originally the silk factories of Lyon. If not, there is a list of about 35 other places at which Ted and I can torture the French with our bizarre behavior
