Day 6(bis) Mon. Oct. 20 2008
Ted and I went for a walk here in Jausiers (France) @ 9:00 pm...
Does anyone live here?
Are they home?
Are they all in bed?
The streets are bare, the houses unlit. Only the through traffic and some braying gives us a clue that the area is not deserted.
Then we all heard a noise.
“Hey”, I said, “Did someone else put bad gas in a diesel? What is wrong with that truck?”
Ted: “He’s dragging something.”
The truck went by us draggin’ his hind bumper. He stopped in an unlit area and removed the bumper. This is where Ted and I disagree. I thought he disposed of it, hiding it in some adjacent grassy area. Ted says he thought he threw the bumper alright, but in the back of his 18 wheeler, somewhere.
We tried to imagine how the bumper fell off and why he would remove it in an “unlit” area. For me it was even more of a mystery of why he would jettison it and not attach it later. So

Ted is probably right that he threw it in his vehicle somewhere. (Didn't wish to leave the evidence.)
Scary mishaps occur regularly on these mountainy hair-pin curves. We remembered the truck who teetered past us missing us by centimeters. Ted remarked, “You probably didn’t notice with your eyes shut, but even I don’t get how the back end of that truck didn’t take us out.”
Hmmmmmmmm. So this ripped off bumper…..
Ted looked serious now. “Well, we have a picture of this truck and when they find some poor
Renault at the bottom of some ravine
between here and Cuneo, we’ll know which bumper to test.”
Renault at the bottom of some ravine
We haven’t heard anything about smashed or rolled over cars at mountain bottoms yet, and unfortunately our picture was too dark to be worth much.
